Chapter 10. Personally Safe and Sound (PSnS)

PSnS is a powerful backup utility that lets you safeguard your OS/2 system against loss of data. It allows you to set up a backup strategy for each activity you perform on your machine. This strategy, once employed, provides protection against all of the likely causes of data loss: user errors, hardware malfunctions, malicious damage and disasters.

Using PSnS, you can create backups for

It allows you to store backups into a Backup Set which can reside on any of the following Storage Devices:

PSnS uses a backup method to control each backup. Backup methods contain all the information needed to execute the backup: which files and folders to back up, and where and how to store them.

You can restore data simply by selecting the files or folders you want restored. PSnS carries out all management functions necessary to retrieve data from the backups. PSnS keeps an inventory of all the files that have backups, including information about where the file is stored, its attributes, how many versions exist, and so on. This makes restoring lost or damaged data simple and easy because it does not rely on you to catalog and organize the backup media.

The program supports all the features of the OS/2 file systems, including:

PSnS is compatible with the IBM ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager, IBM's flagship data storage management system.

For instructions about using PSnS please refer to the PSnS online documentation, the Redbook 'Inside OS/2 Warp Server, Volume 2' (SG24-4702-00) and the web site http://www.wdg.uk.ibm.com/psns.
