11.2 Tested and Supported Update Configurations

Chapter 12. Updating An Existing File and Print Server

If you use OS/2 Warp Server Version 4 (which includes OS/2 Warp V3 as the base operating system and LAN Server 5.0) or any prior OS/2 and LAN Server configuration, such as OS/2 2.11 and LAN Server Version 3, you have to update the base operating system to OS/2 Warp 4. As you will recognize, there is no offical way to update only the base operating system.

Note:

IBM does not support the migration of any previous version of OS/2 (2.1x, 3.0 and so forth) to OS/2 Warp 4 with OS/2 Warp Server!

However, we also tested a migration of OS/2 2.11 with LAN Server 3.0 and also OS/2 Warp Server to a OS/2 Warp 4 base without formatting the hard disk and this also worked. We had to backup the LAN Server configuration files (like ACL's and NET.ACC's) before starting the migration. However, this kind of update is not supported by IBM. Following the proceeding steps will not take you much longer, it is definitly the safer:
